Software, used for both legitimate and malicious purposes, that can secretly capture all keystrokes on a computer system and record them to a file. Computer criminals have used key loggers in recent years to capture such items as passwords and login names for financial and other sensitive accounts.
When used for malicious purposes the program is typically set to transmit the keystroke log over the the Internet to another computer setup to receive these files. The criminal actors involved then retrieve the login information from these computers and use it to access bank accounts and similar in order to transfer (commit theft) monies to there own accounts.
